How to Feel Miserable as an Artist
Around 2004 I went to an exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago where I picked up a Xerox of this. I later found out it was authored by Keri Smith, a writer, artist and illustrator. I found it today, carefully put away, and will share it here, with 100% credit going to Ms Keri Smith.
Links below.
[It's good advice for starting out a new year.]
How to Feel Miserable as an Artist.
1.- Constantly compare yourself to other artists.
2.- Talk to your family about what you do and expect them to cheer you on.
3.- Base the success of your entire career as an artist on one project.
4.- Stick with what you know.
5.- Undervalue your expertise.
6.- Let money dictate what you do.
7.- Bow to societal pressures.
8.- Only do work that your family would love.
9.- Do whatever the client/customer/gallery owner/patron asks.
10- Set unachievable/overwhelming goals to be accomplished by tomorrow.
Thank you to Keri Smith for saving countless artists from themselves.
