Join the women of The Gloria Sirens for a reading and discussion sponsored by The Studio@620 and Wordier Than Thou.

Readers for the evening will include:
Lisa Lanser Rose
Suzannah Gilman
Tiffany Razzano
Gianna Russo
Gloria Muñoz
Heather Jones

We'll be asking for a suggested $5 donation at the door.

At TheGloriaSirens.com, we’re building a virtual auditorium where we and other creative women can promote the voices that impress and move us, where we can take artistic chances without fear of silencing, and where we’re encouraged, even goaded, to sing our riskiest songs and dare give full throat to our unspeakable truths.

Or to just be silly.

We hope that we touch and amuse you, but most of all empower you. We hope that whatever you hear us doing here, you think to yourself, “Aw heck, I can do that,” and then you go do it, or the artistic equivalent, somewhere, somehow.

To be treated as full writers (and not just women writers), we need our sisterhood, and that’s why The Gloria Sirens is here. Still not sure there’s a problem? For four years VIDA has tallied the rate of publication between women and men in the world’s most respected literary outlets. VIDA recently reported that although there are signs of progress, the 2013 numbers haven’t budged from the dismal 2012: most literary publications showcase fewer than thirty percent of work by women.

The Gloria Sirens galvanizes women wordsmiths and other artists together in person, in print, online, and across all time and space, mostly so we know we’re not the only ones who’d rather craft a time-traveling paragraph than watch Doctor Who.

Let’s get heard.

The Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum.

Three months ago, there was an article in a local newspaper about the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, saying that there was controversy between certain members of the community and the Museum. Said article stated that control of the Museum might be taken from current staff and be turned over to SPC.

By coincidence, Sharon Norwood, who interned at Mindy Solomon Gallery years ago, had a one-woman show there. My first visit, was followed by a brief write-up on Facebook, complete with photographs. Since then, I have returned for three other visits.

This is a gem of a small museum in service to its community. The shows I have seen are well-themed and curated, reflecting its mission. The place is spotless, the staff friendly, knowledgeable and informative. As with most small museums, it multitasks for social functions. My most recent visit was for the Juneteenth Celebration.

I arrived late, to find drummers and an ongoing town meeting/group discussion where everyone spoke their piece about community concerns in turn. At the end of this, people went outside into the beautiful gardens behind the main structure, and small fireworks were set off in a family-like gathering. I also took photographs of this and put them on Facebook. They can be accessed on my personal page.

From my visits to the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum, what I have observed first-hand is a good, ethnic, small, well-run museum doing what small ethnic museums do. By any measure it is an asset to the community it serves and the city of Saint Petersburg as well.

Alternate Venues: What are they?

What is an alternate venue? The moniker is a much-desired brand because it stands out from the others. Defining the term is not easy, because it can take many forms, but at the simplest level, it is an alternate to what? The mainstream.

An AV has to be doing things outside the norm. It is one place where bigger is not usually better. Well meaning people in tribal cultures, like Saint Petersburg Fl., will claim in knee-jerk fashion  that the places their cronies own or where they get to - or hope to show - to be AVs.
This is often followed by dogmatic articles of faith ("I believe in...") or worse.

Let's do a mainstream checklist:

The usual artists, themes, populist memes we have seen a thousand times, 40% commission, the same old everything, including bands, ethnic (lily white) emphasis, hackneyed commercial attitude, etc.
There is nothing wrong with this. It's the way it's done, but does not remotely qualify as an AV.
The number one qualifier for an AV is: Daring. It takes unbridled, almost suicidal passion to break away from the pack and do something else, given the risky nature of the business in its mainstream form.
Risk-taking is the handmaiden of reward for AVs.  Who has taken them in the area? From memory... (and I am probably leaving many out, so please do not feel offended if yours goes unmentioned)
...David Audet's gallery, Kenny Echezabal's Ybor space on 7th, all Gala Corina shows, everything Theo Wujcik was involved with, Beaux Arts, the recent eve-N-odd gallery by Jennifer Kosharek, Mindy Solomon gallery, which may have looked mainstream to many, but for elevating the quality of her gallery to Museum levels. Currently, in Tampa, there is EPOXY, a non-commercial space run by four women that is presenting an eclectic series of unusual shows, outdoing themselves and elegantly rebooting the meme for the arts in Tampa. In Saint Petersburg, there is the Venture Compound, an arts and music venue run by Jesse Vance and Brad Kokay that has simply demolished conventions (including their own!) surrounding the arts and music in St. Petersburg -- and have managed to last three years (!!!).

To all of you, I salute you. To those who want the title, work harder, smarter and closer to the heart.

--- Luis

$10 TO PARTY WITH DANNY "PARTY ANIMAL" PIECHOCKI

AHLEUCHATISTAS (NC) - Danny Piechocki's biological parents.

JITTERS - Nathan Corder lost a bet and has to play in this band for 7 more months.

ZULU WAVE - As most people know, in high school Michael J. Wave made some serious waves when Hollywood decided to take his life story of being a small town basketball playing werewolf and put it on the silver screen. Several years, lovers, and addictions later he settled down in Clearwater, Florida and went on to form Zulu Wave.

WOLF FACE - No popular music act of the '60s, '70s, '80s, or '90s attracted a more varied audience than Wolf Face. Beginning in the mid- to late '60s as a Beatlesque ensemble, they quickly developed as songwriters and singers to create a style of their own that carried them from psychedelia to progressive pop. Then, after hitting a popular trough, they reinvented themselves as perhaps the most successful white soul act of all time. What remained a constant throughout their history is their extraordinary singing, rooted in three voices that were appealing individually and melded together perfectly.

SAMURAI SHOTGUN - Samurai's don't have shotguns. Or feelings.

LA LUCHA - House band for the Brass Mug

EARLY FORMS - One of three Bee Gees cover bands performing this evening.

BEES AND ENORMOUS TIGERS (Tallahassee) -They're literally bringing bees.

LIONS AFTER DARK - Thirty nine thousand years ago, a dark force emerged from deep within the earth. That force was known as Peylon and ruled for a thousand years. Then all the creatures of nearby starsystems banned together and defeated Peylon and his army of merchant cannibals. Then everyone totally forgot this happened.

EIGHT MILLION KAMI - Slightly better than Seven Million Kami

SNACKING - Do you feel oily? I feel oily.

OPHELIA - Blast Beats and Dirty Sheets

SAM WOLTER - A cat pawing at a Theremin.

HOLLIS SMITH - Shredded cheesefood product, with a hint of lime.

DIREWOOD - Barry White meets Barry Manilow. It's like a smoothie.

MARK CASTLE - Just like Bone Thugz N' Harmony, except white.

The Warehouse Arts District in collaboration with the Arts Association St. Petersburg Inc., the The EDGE District of St. Petersburg, the Central Arts District, the Grand Central District Association, the Waterfront District and the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance invite you to the St. Pete Second Saturday ArtWalk, Father’s Day Edition, on June 14, 2014 from 5-9 p.m.

Ride one of our two red trolleys as they take you on a tour of over 30 warehouses, galleries and studios that are staying open late just for you!

This month’s Artwalk Trolley will begin at 4pm which includes a 4pm boarding location at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida (MFA). This coincides with their Beer Project event taking place during the day. There will also be an MFA-sponsored craft beer sampling at select ArtWalk venues (see list below). ArtWalk patrons can also pick up a scavenger “ticket” at each venue to enter into a drawing for prizes at 3 Daughters Brewing. For more details, visit http://www.fine-arts.org/beer-project.

Aside from the boarding location at the Museum, our one continuous trolley loop goes from the roundabout at 10th Street and Central Avenue to deep in the heart of the Warehouse Arts District. The shortened loop is to help reduce rider wait time! You can also use The Central Avenue Trolley ($.50) to reach galleries and shops on Central Avenue to Beach Drive.

The studios and galleries provide an informal, engaging social evening to drop in and meet our community's artists. Many will have demonstrations and refreshments. Be the first to see new affordable works of fine, glass, and clay art!

Handmade, one of a kind, unique, local art make excellent Father’s Day gifts! Ride the trolley to these venues or print the map and drive yourself. Browse, watch and purchase “Where Art is Made”!

The Father’s Day May trolley is sponsored by Duke Energy, Courtyard by Marriott, The Downtown Partnership, The Orsini & Rose Law Firm, The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance and The Studio@620.

Free trolley parking can be found on 1st Ave N and 1st Ave S from 15th St to 30th Street. Additional parking will be available for trolley riders in the vacant lot at the Northeast corner of Central Avenue and 29th Street (Please note that this is NOT one of our trolley stops). Tracing vs Drawing

http://www.lostateminor.com/2014/06/11/twins-develop-low-tech-method-transcribing-reality-paper-amazing-detail/

This sounds like a not-so-healthy approach. But it brings up a subtle but critical issue in this era where people tend to trace instead of drawing. Besides all the factors concerning the significance of drawing, the stereotypical graphic look, etc., what concerns me most is the loss of the effects of stereotaxic vision. I'm not saying it is required, but that cameras and screens "see" very differently than human eyes do. Of course, since people spend a huge percentage of their time looking at simulations of reality (camera-derived imagery) they may not be able to tell the difference. An art-buddy, now dead, and I used to play a game at outdoor art shows back in the '80s to see if we could guess whether it was drawn from reality or from a photograph.

On Friday, June 6th, join Leslie Neumann and Susan Gott at the Gadsden Arts Center in Quincy, Florida (near Tallahassee) for HOT WAX, HOT GLASS featuring amazing individual pieces of artwork as well as several creations pairing two unlikely mediums of cast glass and wax encaustic into gorgeous collaborations.

Both artists live, work and play along the West coast of Florida, from Tampa Bay to Aripeka, to the springs of Weeki Wachee. Avid conservationists, both artists have a deep love and respect of Florida, the aquifers, the wetlands, the wildlife and the precious resources of the region. This understanding crosses over to a deeper spiritual understanding that ties the work and the artists together. Leslie and Susan both use material and process to influence color and form in their work.

At 6:30pm, both artists will take a few minutes to speak about their individual works and collaborations.

Leslie, working with encaustic (hot wax) and oil paint, applies the paint and wax to a surface while hot, and as it congeals she scrapes away colors, engraves words or pictographs, resulting in a rich luminous surface.

Susan casts molten glass directly from a furnace burning at 2300ºF, and incorporates images, symbols, inclusions and color, inspired by nature with ancient symbolism.

Together their friendship and common interest in the natural world served to create a new means of expression in their mutual interest in the spiritual. “Our technical discussions of how we were going to make something did not preclude our deeper understanding of what the work was about. The creation of these works allowed a new crossing into our own interest in the mystic. This mutual understanding was really exciting for us. We quickly worked through the technical challenges and timelines, and what we produced was beyond our expectations.“ –Susan Gott

About Leslie
Leslie Neumann received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California, and a Master’s Degree in painting from New York University in Manhattan. Her images are inspired by the raw, primitive energy of the wetlands and the vast, cosmic night sky that surround her. Made with oil paint and encaustic, the hot wax is applied with a brush. As it cools, the artist scrapes through to reveal other layers of color, resulting in a luminous and textured surface. Read more here: http://www.leslieneumann.com/.

About Susan
Susan Gott holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Kent State University and has studied at Pilchuck, Penland, Haystack and Arrowmont Schools for glass. She has worked in glass for over 30 years and specializes in large scale, cast glass sculpture that incorporates steel or stone. Each sculpture is created using a sand mold process where each piece is individually hand carved, colored, cast from the molten glass, and hand polished to reveal the interior. The work embodies her interest in mythological symbolism and philosophies from ancient cultures that express the union of human being and nature. The resulting glass, with primitive qualities and metaphors, are a visual re—presentation of the cycles of life. Read more here: http://www.gottglass.com/
