"Sweet little lies"
The incongruities of human individual and social behavior are the source of inspiration for Beate Marston's work.
Her most recent mini-series, "Sweet little lies", deals with the observation that, generally speaking, we "can't handle the truth" as the movie quote so aptly goes. It looks at our need to smooth out our social interactions by avoiding "the ugly truths" and opting instead for the sweet little lies we tell ourselves and others, so that we can face the world safely wrapped in our illusional coats of niceness.
The pieces have been hand built from red earthenware, colored with underglazes, then partially glazed and fired. Care has been taken to convey the subtleties of the theme in the expression of the individual piece and on the surface finish. The deliberate use of glaze serves to underscore the incongruences that have been dealt with thematically.

St. Petersburg's Second Saturday ArtWalk presents over 30 galleries and studios in the Waterfront Arts, Central Arts District, The EDGE District of St. Petersburg, Grand Central District Association and the Warehouse Arts District coming together as one arts destination.
Be the first to see new affordable works of art, as ArtWalk is Opening Night where many galleries and studios premiere new works. Some are only open on ArtWalk, and many offer demonstrations and refreshments. It’s impossible to take in the entire ArtWalk in one night! Plan to drive, walk, or take the trolleys to visit the districts of your choice.
Our free trolley shuttles will have an art guide on board talking about each venue on our one continuous trolley loop that goes from the 3rd Street and Central Avenue to deep in the heart of the Warehouse Arts District. You can park for free on 1st Ave N and 1st Ave S from 15th St to 30th Street. Additional parking will be available for trolley riders in the vacant lot at the Northeast corner of Central Avenue and 29th Street (Please note that this is NOT one of our trolley stops). In addition, venues with large free parking lots are Soft Water Studios, the Morean Center for Clay at the Train Station, the Clay Center of St. Petersburg, the Florida Holocaust Museum and the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American Museum.
Duke Energy is our sponsor. The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance, the Arts Association St. Petersburg Inc., the EDGE District, the Grand Central District, and the Warehouse Arts District associations coordinate St. Petersburg’s Second Saturday ArtWalk. The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance strives to be the community voice, the umbrella organization for the arts -- facilitating artists, arts organizations and creative businesses to work collaboratively; empowering the growth of the arts community, and driving arts-related economic development.
Browse, watch and purchase “Where Art is Made”!

ARTicles Art Gallery presents the exhibition What Remains: mixed media works by Jeannine Hascall in conjunction with St Petersburg's monthly 2nd Saturday ArtWalk event on Saturday, April 11 at 6:00 pm. Her works in paint, photography, collage, and fabric are tied together by a rich content and visual patina that reveals a contemplative sort of storytelling inspired by life events.
"Early on I was surrounded by women who spent much of their time doing needlework and working in their gardens. Much later I realized those practices and traditions were part of my artistic expression."
Jeannine spent much of her life in Southern Illinois and earned a BFA in painting and an MFA in fiber from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. Since moving to St Petersburg, she has continued to explore new media and ideas and began studying with Betsy Lester at the Morean Arts Center.
"I’ve spent years seriously gardening, and I’ve journaled and written otherwise about it. I have always been fascinated by and influenced by the full cycle of blooming and dying. The winter garden's role of returning to the earth is the most beautiful of all the seasonal gardens. As the quest to deal with death and decay are squarely before me at this stage of life, I’d like to think my artwork reflects this fragile, graceful element of what remains and what is lost."
Hascall's art has radical intentions embodied in its torn edges, uneven dyes and shadowy expressionist themes. The result is an incredible body of work with a soothing, earthy color palette, subtle textures, rich layering of imagery and pattern, and hints of her intellectual journey through life and art-making.
Hascall's timely debut solo exhibition here in St. Petersburg also marks the opening of her studio at The Art Lofts @ Florida CraftArt. An opening reception for the exhibition at ARTicles Art Gallery will be held on April 11th, 6-9pm. Her provocative work will be on view through June 6th. For more information contact the gallery at 727-898-6061.
