Georgia Ann Hourdas @ Venture Compound -
It's
hard being a girl, especially when you have to fight worm-zombie cats
to preserve the balance of the universe, all the while certain that you
are fated never to be with the one you love.
sadgirlslookingatthings.tu mblr.com
Georgia Ann Hourdas presents a multimedia three-dimensional world-building exercise, inspired by the fragility and ferocity of the heroines of Japanese manga and anime. Like William Burroughs cutting and inverting the conventions of the detective novel, Hourdas transforms the linear narrative of shows like Mahou Shoujo Madoka Majika and Gunbuster into an otherworldly, impressionistic meditation on need, suffering, and purpose. Her magical girls and space princesses bleed, mutate, scream in agony, shed their skulls, and dive into mysterious and inescapable trances, struggling to balance their demons with the demands of a universe in peril. Her work mythologizes the struggles we face every day, the impossible mandate to survive simply being ourselves.
Reception and artist meet-and-greet for Venture Compound members and invited guests at 6pm. (For more information on becoming a supporting member: http:// theventurecompound.com/ donate/)
Doors open to the public at 8pm, with music from some of St. Pete's most exciting science-adventure bands starting soon after!
