One of the most famous artists alive, Ai Wei Wei, who is also a filmmaker and an architect, was taken into custody, while boarding a plane for Hong Kong. His wife, nephew and employees were also taken away during a raid on his studio. Many were later released.
Apparently the Chinese government is in crackdown mode, and has been detaining rights lawyers/advocates, artists, dissidents and bloggers. There are currently at least eleven people that have become desaparecidos. The crackdown reportedly began with a blog post in an American blog about Chinese people rising and demanding change.
Bringing out the Secret Police and detaining your best and brightest will only exacerbate the inevitable.
