From Jan. 6 - 17, the Centre Gallery at the University of South Florida will host Converge by The Focus Group, featuring works by Ariel DeWitt, Alan Phan, Scott Pierce, Hillary Reed, Jeremy Rivera, Kristen Roles, Candyce Strayer, and Erica Wold. Visitors to the gallery will encounter work that will serve as an aggregate display of the processes and styles currently being explored by the group’s members.

The Focus Group is an organization of Pre-professional Artists working through the mediums of photography, video art, and installation. Creating digitally, in film, or with alternative processes, the artists are coming together from a scope of artistic directions and conceptual intentions in one collective exhibition. Please be aware that some of the images will include adult themes and explicit content.

DessART, Centre Gallery’s opening reception for this exhibit, will be held on Jan. 6 from 12 – 1pm. The closing reception for Converge will be held from 7 – 9pm on Friday, Jan. 17, in the Centre Gallery. Beginning on January 18th and happening every Third Saturday, the Duncan McClellan Gallery will host a “Design Your Own Etched Glass” event. About Sir Dr. Admiral Rupert Xavier:

Just who is Sir Dr. Admiral Rupert Xavier? Truthfully, not much is known about him (probably the way he would prefer it), but these are the facts: He was an only child and grew up on a street with no other children; he considered himself a deep man, but didn’t care for making waves or water-related metaphors; he was a man of many fears who suffered from dozen daytime anxieties, and at least three nighttime ones; He enjoyed his job as a Google car driver because it combined his love of maps and street photography; his hobbies were making and flying paper planes, collecting and analyzing viruses, and daydreaming about awesome adventures in nonexistent locations; he had a pet snail named Chekov and one best friend called Rooster Bronson; his favorites foods were pistachio ice-cream soup, and soft boiled eggs; he was not on Facebook. And those are the facts. The rest is anyone’s guess.

About the artist:

Daniel Mrgan is a graphic designer, illustrator, and woodburner residing in awesome St. Petersburg, Florida. His work and influences can best be described as one small, weathered building on the edge of town with creaky wood floors and a broken elevator, occupied by tenants such as silent cinema, Eastern-European stop-motion animation, folk art, melancholy, and music – all sitting around, drinking tea, eating soft boiled eggs, and watching Olympic games, nature documentaries, and vintage cartoons all night long.

On Oleson Gallery's "Show Up and Throw Up" show..

James Oleson gallery has been stepping up during the past few months with several interesting shows. This Saturday, January 18th, 2014, they are plying the boundaries with their "Show up and Throw up" Show.

Zero vetting or curating. No applications, nothing. Artists show up and hang their work before opening time. D-a-r-i-n-g. 

The press release makes allusions to reacting against the idea of Juried Art Shows, pushed by Velva Lee Heraty with her "Dreams" show at Kahwa S. late last year. Second, it also is against the notion of a gallery working from a list of artists, which seems aimed at Blue Lucy. The release was penned by "Marko"...

I am looking forward to seeing this one.

Seen: Theo Wujcik's "New Paintings" @ Selby Galleries in Sarasota.

Selby Gallery is on the Campus of Ringling School of Arts and  Design in Sarasota. Recently they hosted a show titled "Theo Wujcik: New Paintings". This was a binary exhibit in conjunction with a Kirk Ke Wang show at a nearby venue. I did not have the opportunity to see the latter.

Many of the works in this show, while new, are continuations of long-running series in Wujcik's work. He has been doing portraits of artists he admires for decades. In this show there are several:


Theo Wucjik, "Nocturne"

In the Warhol. "Nocturne", the portrait is of Mao, as in the famous Warhol work. Even without the artist's visage, we know who the painting is about, and it's not Mao. These works, a kind of hommage that Theo has been doing using different media over the years, are encoded with references to each artist. In the case of Warhol. the title is somewhat obscure, but refers back to a vinyl era record of Chopin's Nocturnes that Warhol illustrated the cover for.




But this is not to say that this is "the solution" to this (or any other) work shown here. Theo's work is anything but monosemic. Besides the intellectual allusions, the level of energy in these works is extraordinary. Even after making the connections, one is catapulted into visceral white water.

In "Mountain Jade" we see a Rolling Rock Label and cascading jade elephants floating. The title is "Mountain Jade". Tourist trap jade elephants raining down upon us? An allusion to how jade is mined in the mountains of China? The differences between American branding and the invasion of Chinese goods into the culture?

The dissonance between the title and the Chinese appearance of the plates and soup is almost but not quite overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of this painting. Is this suggesting that the Chinese influence (take over?) of the US will be so complete?




Theo Wujcik was born in Detroit, in 1936, went to the University of New Mexico, spent a year at Tamarind printing for several major artists, Printed for Jasper Johns at Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles, Was cofounder of the Detroit Lithography workshop. Moved to Tampa, worked in Graphic Studio and taught there from 1970-2003 when he retired.

In 1973, Thomas Albright described mail art as a "far-reaching, far-out, and potentially revolutionary avant-garde cultural ‘underground.’" Some twenty years later, Ken Friedman, one of the pioneers of mail art, called the medium "boring," and compared its participants to "small town gossips." For a medium that once promised a refreshing alternative to the machinations of the art world, mail art seems to have passed its day without ever reaching its full potential.
Much of the basis for this discrepancy lies with mail artists themselves. For them intellectual inquiry and scholarship is often deemed contrary to the essential spirit of the medium. As Ken Friedman notes, "mail artists often claim to seek broad public discourse (but they have) little tolerance for differences of opinion, style, or culture." Many mail artists react with hostility to probing inquiries. When asked about his intriguing approaches to collaboration, for instance, Rudi Rubberoid responded "What do you mean ‘why for’? . . . Why do I cut & send? Becoz my goat is pregnant, ok?" Though often reveling in pithy and self-righteous iconoclasm, mail artists evince a pronounced lack of critical distance from their work. Instead they have inaugurated a "separate and unequal" institution for themselves, creating an atmosphere in which outsiders are regarded with suspicion and critical thinkers often castigated as "academics." Conversely, mail artists frequently trumpet themselves as part of "the most important art movement in the world." In short, correspondence art has functioned more as a social phenomenon than a sustained and incisive aesthetic discourse. Above all, it remains an art form trapped at an impasse, requiring a reinvestigation of its history and an evaluation of its attributes and character.

The Domino Effect: Hoffman-Porges building sold.




This building became a gallery when Marcy Hoffman bought it. She owned it for years, then moved out of state. Jill Scott and her husband, "The General" bought it, reopened it as a gallery, hosting several shows, including many featuring YAA artists (Under Shiver and Shiver productions), and Mishou Sanchez's solo show.

The gallery/frame shop had trouble defining itself, and soldiered on. This is where a couple of guest curators could have made a huge difference, and I said so, but did not know that the building was for sale.

Another Gallery Closes: Bye-bye, eve N odd.

There have been several articles and blogs about the imminent closing of eve N odd gallery. Some of these people reporting on this had never set foot in the gallery or spoken with its owner until now. 

The City's artists and gallerists continue to endure very tough economic conditions, and many galleries hang by a thread or have closed. Now this.

 I came to eve N odd (not Eve n Odd) not long after it opened, about three years ago and was immediately struck by several things. A large part of the store carried the work of several artists -- and some crafts. Practically every inch of wall and floor space was taken up with these retail items to nearly eye level. On the wall above that was mostly Jennifer Kosharek's work, bright canvases with figurative images of personal symbolism painted on them. Instantly, I knew this was a unique space, the product of an unusual mind, and immediately began writing about it and its owner.

On the back wall, in a space about six by twelve feet, is where the shows were held. There was more wallspace in Mindy Solomon's closet in her old space on 2nd. Few gallerists would have imagined such a small space as viable for putting on shows, but Jennifer did. 

And what shows they were.

I was there back then, advertised and went to the shows, and reviewed them here (Google: Art Taco eve N odd and/or Jennifer Kosharek).  She blithely broke all the usual guidelines for gallerists and yet delivered (for the area) leading edge, creatively curated, outlier shows on a consistent basis. Jennifer's involvement with Mail Art/Fluxus/Vispo, whose elites are broadly distributed around the world and her considerable early web presencence globalized her view as a gallerist and resulted in many shows with an international flavor. Some were non-commercial (as in nothing for sale!). Several major artists in this niche actually came to Saint Petersburg and some performed (to ridiculously small audiences). 

Jennifer Kosharek was Art Taco's 2012 Person of the Year in the Arts. I wasn't the only one who noticed the quality of the shows. Many others did, including Mindy Solomon. It was a tumultuous year, and not just economically. One fine July day when Jennifer and I had traveled to Orlando for the Sketchbook show, while we walked around a tree shaded street, she confided in me that she thought she was pregnant. She was, and it is for this reason that eve N odd is closing.

She will be focusing on her baby (her fourth), and will continue to work on her excellent art. She will be teaching a class on mail art at The Morean soon, check on their website for details. It is a unique opportunity to learn about this from one of its luminaries.

 I think we will be seeing a lot more from Jennifer Kosharek and soon, but I will miss eve N oddand the memories of good times and brilliant shows there. I wish Jennifer nothing but the best.

PS. One of the great lessons eve N odd brought to us is how a micro-gallery space can achieve a significant presence in an area such as Saint Pete, and in genre, niche art forms. Yes, size matters, but as the trite saying goes, even more what you do with it. Kosharek's eve N odd showed us firsthand how far brilliance, hard work and a large, dripping wedge of daring can go.

Warren Kenny @ Works in Progress Gallery 
We are so excited to be featuring Warren Kenny in our gallery space this month for the Second Saturday Art Walk! Warren's exceptionally detailed, brilliantly hued and imaginative colored pencil drawings will fascinate you, as well as make you wonder....what goes on in his head!? Sea creatures from another realm, flamingos, snakes, fish, crustaceans....all share space when Warren's improvisations reach their destination!

The process is as remarkable as the end result....."My art making process is reminiscent of jazz improvisation. At the beginning of a piece I am uncertain of its final form. Since I exclusively use colored pencils, it is impossible for me to change my mind once I go in a certain direction. Colored pencils cannot be erased, but allow for an extreme amount of detail and control. As I flesh out a piece I leave certain spaces open to go back over later as the composition becomes apparent to me. I am fascinated by different textures, colors and all forms of nature. Art to me is about the process as much as it is the final product with each piece usually taking me upwards of 60 hours."

Local art installation mini canvas show. Paint a picture of what you love about St Pete or what the city means to you and be a part of our group project! All ages welcome to participate, all materials welcome on canvas. As an artist is our project you receive a general admission ticket to the show both for only $10 (once canvas is picked up artwork is due back by January 9th) Artists can price and sell their work. The show will be on display through January 25. All sales go to the artist with no gallery commission.

General admission standing room tickets are $10
VIP runway seats and a ticket to the show are $20

Interested in showing your larger artwork in the show? We will be accepting artwork now through 1.9.14 It is an open call, all artwork themes are welcome to our all ages event. Up to 3 works is $30. Each additional work is $10. If a work is over 2 feet, it counts as 2 works. All wall art must be wired on the back of the frame. All artwork must be labeled on the back with artist name, phone number and email address. All participating artists get into the event for free. All art sales go to the artist with no gallery commission.

Description:     Omena, Minnesota wood sculptor Larry Fox combines his background in architecture with his current body of work to create deep wall-relief and free-standing sculptures in wood and mixed media. Most of the work features a rich, deep palette of fall colors such as rust, browns, cream, oranges, reds and goldenrod.  Decorative at first glance, his work commands further introspection to question what appears to be impossibly-achieved angles and disappearing curves in striated, sculptural wooden relief ‘blocks.’  He achieves a beauty and sophistication through his use of applied canvas and a variety of textures applied to each wooden form, and most of the pieces are mobile in the sense that many of the smaller works can be hung vertically, horizonally or in infinite compositions.  His work is represented throughout the U.S. and in Florida through Michele Tuegel Contemporary.

The Duncan McClellan Gallery proudly presents the MIT GLASS LAB with Peter Houk, Martin Demaine and Erik Demaine. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Glass Lab community is composed of a diverse and ever-changing group of people ranging from MIT undergraduate and graduate students to MIT alumni to glass art professionals invited into the program to enrich the Glass Lab experience.

At 5pm on Saturday, January 11th, the gallery doors will open to reveal the creativity that flows out of MIT including truly inspirational collaborations and individual pieces.

While you browse, enjoy an adult beverage, soda or water for a donation from our custom bars (All donations benefit the DMG School Project).

On Sunday, January 12, 2014 at 2pm, listen to Peter Houk, Martin Demaine and Erik Demaine lecture at Hot Gatherings, Cool Conversations, DMG School Project’s Visiting Glass Artists Series at the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg. Come early and enjoy brunch at 1pm with a 15% off “HotShop” discount (not to be used in conjunction with museum membership discounts) and receive a free mimosa. About the artists:

Peter Houk took up the leadership of the MIT Glass Lab in 1997. His artwork ranges from intimate pieces in which the blown, sandblasted and painted vessel is used as a vehicle for landscape, to sculptural work-sometimes on a large scale-installed in architectural settings.

Martin L. (Marty) Demaine is an artist and mathematician, and after studying glassblowing in England, he began his artistic career by blowing art glass in New Brunswick in the early 1970s. His was the first one-man glass studio in Canada. Since joining MIT, Demaine blows glass as an instructor at the MIT Glass Lab; his newer work features innovative glassblowing techniques intended as a puzzle to his fellow glassblowers. Marty is also the father of MIT Computer Science professor and MacArthur Fellow, Erik Demaine.

Erik Demaine, known as a child prodigy, entered Dalhousie University in Canada at the age of 12, completed his bachelor's degree at 14 and completed his PhD when only 20 years old. Erik joined the MIT faculty in 2001 at age 20, the youngest professor in the history of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Erik and Martin Demaine’s joint mathematical works focus primarily on the mathematics of folding and unfolding objects out of flat materials such as paper and on the computational complexity of games and puzzles.

Join poet/host Diana Browning for Sunday Nite Open Mic at a brand new location. This event will be held the first Sunday of January 2014 at Inkwood Books. Calling all poets, musicians, comedians and story-tellers to showcase your talent or just come out and listen to some of the best talent in Tampa Bay.

There is no cover charge but the owner suggested a donation
of $5 for the beer and wine she will be serving - or better yet, buy a book! Everybody's fave, Moe St. Evergreen will be providing sound again with his excellent system which makes all of us sound so good! Can't wait to see the whole group again!

2013 Person of the Year in the Arts, Jennifer Kosharek

The Art Taco Person of the Year in the Arts is Jennifer Kosharek. Jennifer is a standout Saint Petersburg artist mainly doing Folk-style paintings of a personal symbolist nature, full of autobiographical references, art dolls and has worked making jewelry in the past. Hers is a style that skirts the edges of craft, but doesn't fall into it. She is also an international mail artist of some renown, her work in the collections of several major museums and is part of contemporary Fluxus having written and performed several pieces of her own, as well as that of others.

This would be more than enough to make her a candidate for AT/POY, but she also owns and runs a powerhouse tiny gallery in the Crislip Arcade called eve N odd. This space, filled to the brim with the works of many artists as well as Jennifer's. One wall is devoted to exhibition space, perhaps 5x10ft. This space has been consistently the venue for some of the best shows in the Bay Area. Innovative themes, perhaps the first Instagram show, years ahead of Tempus. Mail Art, Fluxus and much more. eve N odd receives the highest praise from some of the other top gallerists in Saint Petersburg.

Jennifer's "Frida" mural in the 600blk alley, is by far the best-known in the Bay Area, having received seventeen thousand likes so far on Instagram.

  For all this, and her social acumen and poise in front of the TV cameras, this is our Person of The Year.

Postscript: Jennifer rented a wall to a mediocre Detroit artist I won't name here, which diluted the singular feel the gallery had. Then she became pregnant, and the gallery closed. She is still actively producing work in the area and curating the Pom Pom restaurant walls.
