An Excruciatingly Ordinary Toy Theater Show By Zach Dorn is a hour long paper puppet theater performance filmed on a tiny handmade stage and projected on a screen behind him activily moving and filming his creations. Zach grew up in Tampa and recently moved back to the Bay Area. He hopes to go on a large tour and work on a year long project at Weeki Wachee Springs in the near future.
"Zach Dorn weaves lost journal entries into peculiar tales by manipulating digital cameras through toy-sized streets filled with paper puppets. A lonely puppeteer stalks the child of two notorious celebrities, a three-foot ghost plagues an eight-year-old boy’s fragile psyche, and an opera-singing landlord refuses to return a security deposit. These stories and more explode onto the stage in this modern exploration into Toy Theater. The show received a Jim Henson Foundation Seed Award in 2015."

The Truth about The truth about Modern Art.
Degenerate art (German: Entartete Kunst) was a term adopted by the Nazi regime in Germany to describe virtually all modern art. Such art was banned on the grounds that it was un-German, Jewish, or Communist in nature, and those identified as degenerate artists were subjected to sanctions.
This video on Alex Jones' Infowars echoes the Nazi's contempt for Modernist Art, except for current Post- and Neo Modern current work. The author, Paul Joseph Watson, is an editor at large of Infowars and Prison Planet, both reactionary, ultra-right, Neo-Nazi propaganda organizations.
This would be easily dismissable except for the fact that many artists have fallen for it. Mostly people whose work relies on extreme realist skills. I have now had this exchange with two of St. Petersburg's better artists, a sculptor and a painter, both of whom I love and respect. These are artists that are not at the crest of art at the moment. The divisionary tone of Watson's screed appeals to their being left behind the curve, outside the Golden Wall, exacerbated by their being in the prime of their lives.
There are grotesque misunderstandings (or purposeful attacks) on Modernists from a century ago, particularly Marcel DuChamp, though few of the greats are spared. As with most reactionary thinkers, Watson is unable to deal with change over time. Curiously, he pegs the Golden Age of Art (a ridiculous term) ending with Modernism, which 'coincides' with the McKinley era, which Karl Rove always posited as Conservatism's Golden Age. He also sells the idea that art has standards, objective qualia, which it did during the heyday of The Academy, but times have changed.
That change made a splash among the Modernists with the consequences of French Colonialism, when cultural items began making their way back into France, with alien styles and aesthetics - to what the French artists had been taught. The dumbasses rejected all of it. The visionaries soon realized that skill is also content, and in this case a cultural signifier defining and limiting what could be art. It was a form of imperial dominance.
Picasso and others saw this, and freed from its fetters, moved on from their honed realist skills into other forms. The world followed. These Neo Nazis come very close to calling this "degenerate art". Their arbitrary lines of demarcation deliberately pit artists against artists to do their dirty work for them, under the excuse (and this may sound familiar) that Art can be great again.
Talk about Art, but don't fall for this lowbrow propaganda, or worse, resent your fellow younger artists or institutions of higher learning, which the Infowars bunch would close in an instant.

Even the old masters had varying styles, all of which manipulate reality
in some way to appeal to their personal ideals. That's what duchamp's
fountain was about, it's a statement about art existing in the
individual and being subjective. To provide some context, Duchamp
submitted his piece to an American art exhibit of which he was a panel
member, the exhibit promised that all who paid the entrance fee would be
accepted, yet his work was rejected. The urinal is not suppose to be a
beautful work, rather it represents the debate on what art is, a
statement about the concept of art and about the political nature of
art. That debate continues today and many people enjoy the work and the
ideas it represents.
In the face of dramatic and rapid change, modern artists no longer felt that naturalistic painting was interesting and the rise of film made sure that people weren't buying portraits, so artists were forced to try new things, not only to fill the market but to satisfy their own growing concerns about the world. For the renaissance artists, they were hired to create works that represented the power of god and the perfection of man, ideals which enhanced the power of their patrons. Modern artists created work for themselves because the patrons had dissapeared, they made work in the face of world war, epidemics, growing industrialization and the massive disruptions those things caused. Chiseling an ideal, timeless man from stone just doesn't say anything about the confusion of the time, the growing secularism, the struggle between idealogies and growing fascination with machinery and utopian dreams.
Your opinion on art is yours to keep, however uneducated it is, and that is the message of modernity, because art is a personal thing, something that happens in you and in the artist. you can call something shit if you want, but don't tell me that you're narrow-minded and ignorant views are greater than mine, or that you somehow understand art more when your only source is a YouTube video which is obviously playing to the cheap seats.

"How the Ghost of You Clings" Kym O'Donnell solo show at Silver Meteor Gallery.
The
gallery walls are flat black, the lighting subdued to the point that it
takes my eyes several minutes to adjust. There are several shelves on
the walls around the room, about 3 ft long by 1 deep. On each is an
assemblage of photographs, purses and other antique objects. They look
historical/period correct at first, but the artist, using period correct
processes, has made the photographs. They were taken in Museums in Wisconsin and Paris. The portraits are mostly directorial mode portraits, done in studio. Lots of artists use film these days, but Kym is using it very purposefully, developing and printing using primitive processes to get the aesthetics she wants.
At first glance, the images look as historical as the frames (and not all of these are old), but the artist is more focused on the pseudo-historical, a fictional past, constructed and lived out in the present.
Kym mentions the weirdness of Wisconsin, the dark side stuff in Michael Lesy's Wisconsin Death Trip, a 1973 book about Florida-worthy bizarre crimes that happened there in the 19th Century. There is an inescapably dramatic quality to the work. Kym is an actress. The archaic nature of the process matches the stylistic timeline and adds an aura of authenticity. It's not so much a rejection of (digital) technology as it is an embrace of the right technology for her vision.
Many of the smallish prints are surreal in nature, of dolls, clowns, the bizarre. There are dried flowers, stylish old purses and things one might find atop a desk or dresser. I love small prints. They are intimately viewed, one-on-one, inhaling the viewer like a piece of red silk through a keyhole. In this sense, they form fractional subsets within each assemblage.
Every shelf tells a story. The spaces are the same, but the content vary. They invoke cycles, but nostalgia (for a past never lived) and some sentimentality abound. I react very physically to these assemblages for some reason, maybe how they project into space beyond the shelves The artist, Kym O'Donnell, tells me there's a metanarrative. I don't hunt for it, but bounce around the room and the individual narratives become modular, connecting in new ways. Katherine Gibson arrives and we all talk, Kym ' s gentle greyhound lies down while we talk, head between my feet. I think about how much our conversation, the dog and setting is like an experimental play, which is what normally happens in this space. We walk outside, say good-bye to Katherine, and talk for a bit as the sunset intensifies on the horizon and the day lapses into the past.
This is in some ways a complex, conceptual show. It playfully engages with the viewer's cultural baggage and assumptions. It's a gem of a show, one you should not miss.

The Leslie Curran Gallery @ ARTicles proudly presents the exhibition ORACLE: Irina Moldovan & James Oleson in conjunction with St Pete's 2nd Saturday ArtWalk on Saturday, April 9th, 6-9pm. Moldovan's acrylic paintings combine richly colored backgrounds with gold leaf laid in grid-like precision. Paired with Oleson's heraldic animalia made of metal, the exhibition emphasizes the colors, media, and symbology often associated with royalty, magic, and other forms of power.
MOLDOVAN'S abstract works are painted with acrylic and gold leaf. The reflective quality of metal leaf adds a luminous dimension to the composition. The earliest use of gold can be traced back to ancient Egyptian civilizations, and gold leaf is most commonly recognized as a major decorative element of illuminated religious manuscripts from the middle ages. Moldovan's traditional choice of medium has been strikingly reinterpreted in this contemporary fine art context. The initial impact is of a graphic pattern of reflective material floating on a deep background, while viewing the work up close reveals a complexity of layers as well as the traces of the artist's mark-making and the nuanced texture of the gold leaf applied by hand.
OLESON describes himself as "a modern day street alchemist, making beauty in the rubble." Salvaging and manipulating cast-off materials, he transforms the mundane into neo-surrealist sculpture, deriving inspiration from the subconscious. From miniature to monumental,the sculptor's mythological creatures, including headless horses and griffons, are part of an ever-expanding personal folklore of powerful and majestic beasts made by painstakingly welding together small metal bits and pieces. The result is an delightfully textured mass that has remarkable visual impact from both afar and in detail.
IRINA MOLDOVAN earned a BA from Weber State University in Utah in 2005. Her works have been exhibited in group exhibitions throughout the United States, including Infusion Gallery in Los Angeles, The Studio @ 620 in St Petersburg, and Art:Raw Gallery in NYC. She can be found in several public and private collections and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Parallel to studio work, she held positions as an art instructor for adults with disabilities and helped manage the Chihuly Collection during her time in St Petersburg. Moldovan was born in Isjum, Ukraine and currently lives in San Francisco.
JAMES OLESON is a sculptor and painter currently living and creating in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he is owner and creative director of Bloom Art Center. Oleson’s iconic work has been exhibited at numerous galleries and can be found in public and private collections throughout the United States. He is the recipient of many awards and grants including a 2015 Individual Artist Grant from the City of St. Petersburg and 2010 Best in Show at ArtLoud Tampa. Oleson currently teaches sculpture at the Morean Arts Center.
ORACLE opens on the evening of April 9th, 6-9pm and continues through May 7th, 2016.

Taking its name from a song written for iconic screen actress Anna May Wong, this exhibit will feature souvenirs of fairgrounds, theaters, and graveyards in the form of handpainted photographs and ephemera.
The exhibition runs from Saturday, April 9th to Sunday, April 24th, 2016.

studios in the Waterfront Arts, Central Arts District, The EDGE District
of St. Petersburg, Grand Central District Association and the Warehouse

Be the first to see new affordable works of art, as ArtWalk is Opening Night where many galleries and studios premiere new works. Our free trolley shuttles will have an art guide on board talking about each venue on our one continuous trolley loop. You can park for free on 1st Ave N and 1st Ave S from 15th St to 30th Street. Additional parking will be available for trolley riders in the vacant lot at the Northeast corner of Central Avenue and 29th Street (Please note that this is NOT one of our trolley stops). fascination with the ceramic process is a major influence in my work.
The touch, the smell and the entire experience of the process brings me
joy and peace. My life is constantly evolving and my work expresses

Moldovan's acrylic paintings combine richly colored backgrounds with gold leaf laid in grid-like precision. Paired with Oleson's heraldic animalia made of metal, the exhibition emphasizes the colors, media, and symbology often associated with royalty, magic, and other forms of power.
MOLDOVAN'S abstract works are painted with acrylic and gold leaf. The reflective quality of metal leaf adds a luminous dimension to the composition. The earliest use of gold can be traced back to ancient Egyptian civilizations, and gold leaf is most commonly recognized as a major decorative element of illuminated religious manuscripts from the middle ages. Moldovan's traditional choice of medium has been strikingly reinterpreted in this contemporary fine art context. The initial impact is of a graphic pattern of reflective material floating on a deep background, while viewing the work up close reveals a complexity of layers as well as the traces of the artist's mark-making and the nuanced texture of the gold leaf applied by hand.
OLESON describes himself as "a modern day street alchemist, making beauty in the rubble." Salvaging and manipulating cast-off materials, he transforms the mundane into neo-surrealist sculpture, deriving inspiration from the subconscious. From miniature to monumental,the sculptor's mythological creatures, including headless horses and griffons, are part of an ever-expanding personal folklore of powerful and majestic beasts made by painstakingly welding together small metal bits and pieces. The result is an delightfully textured mass that has remarkable visual impact from both afar and in detail.
IRINA MOLDOVAN earned a BA from Weber State University in Utah in 2005. Her works have been exhibited in group exhibitions throughout the United States, including Infusion Gallery in Los Angeles, The Studio @ 620 in St Petersburg, and Art:Raw Gallery in NYC. She can be found in several public and private collections and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Parallel to studio work, she held positions as an art instructor for adults with disabilities and helped manage the Chihuly Collection during her time in St Petersburg. Moldovan was born in Isjum, Ukraine and currently lives in San Francisco.
JAMES OLESON is a sculptor and painter currently living and creating in St. Petersburg, Florida, where he is owner and creative director of Bloom Art Center. Oleson’s iconic work has been exhibited at numerous galleries and can be found in public and private collections throughout the United States. He is the recipient of many awards and grants including a 2015 Individual Artist Grant from the City of St. Petersburg and 2010 Best in Show at ArtLoud Tampa. Oleson currently teaches sculpture at the Morean Arts Center.
ORACLE opens on the evening of April 9th, 6-9pm and continues through May 7th, 2016.

Taking its name from a song written for iconic screen actress Anna May Wong, this exhibit will feature souvenirs of fairgrounds, theaters, and graveyards in the form of handpainted photographs and ephemera.
The exhibition runs from Saturday, April 9th to Sunday, April 24th, 2016.
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 9th from 7-11PM.

Be the first to see new affordable works of art, as ArtWalk is Opening Night where many galleries and studios premiere new works. Some are only open on ArtWalk, and many offer demonstrations and refreshments. It’s impossible to take in the entire ArtWalk in one night! Plan to drive, walk, or take the trolleys to visit the districts of your choice.
Our free trolley shuttles will have an art guide on board talking about each venue on our one continuous trolley loop. You can park for free on 1st Ave N and 1st Ave S from 15th St to 30th Street. Additional parking will be available for trolley riders in the vacant lot at the Northeast corner of Central Avenue and 29th Street (Please note that this is NOT one of our trolley stops). The Leslie Curran Gallery premieres a new series of paintings by Jules Cozine inspired by the extraordinary experience of seeing a massive flock of starlings twisting and turning in unison, known as a murmuration. In an instant, thousands of individual birds commit to a moment of beauty that appears both melodic and mathematical.
With her signature ethereal color palette and post-modern compositions, Cozine creates indefinable shapes, like dappled light through the trees. A fractured vision, her soft edges and subtle hues suggest scenes in motion.
Cozine has consistently invested in artistic and educational causes through her association with charitable organizations. Her work is thematically marked by profound dedication to environmental issues. Making this the subject matter of her painting enables Jules to present an enthusiastic celebration of nature.
Cozine's expression of dedication through her artwork and her continued advocacy belies a deep commitment to environmental issues and the beauty of nature. In observance of this pledge, the artist is donating a portion of the proceeds from this event to the TAMPA BAY WATCH, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of the Tampa Bay estuary through scientific and educational programs.
Cozine earned B.A. and B.F.A. degrees from the University of Georgia and an M.F.A. from Georgia State University. She held teaching positions at the University of Georgia, Savannah College of Art, Atlanta College of Art, and Georgia State University while maintaining a rigorous exhibition schedule and building a family before moving to St. Petersburg. Her extensive exhibition record includes multiple solo shows and dozens of group exhibitions. She has traveled widely and lived abroad (including Italy, Japan, France and England), and her family has hosted guest students for the Takamatsu, Japan Student Exchange program for the last four years.
MURMURATIONS opens on the evening of March 12th, 6-9 pm and continues through April 2nd, 2016.

Exquisite Porch
A swampy, creepy-crawly spin on the Surrealist parlor game Exquisite Corpse, this exhibition focuses on the ground-dwelling wildlife of Florida. Artist, writer and independent curator D. Dominick Lombardi selected artists from the New York City area, while the Morean selected artists from Central Florida to play by creating drawings which reference things that go bump in the night. The resulting work raises awareness of the history of the game, its relevance to contemporary art, and celebrates the fauna of the Sunshine State.

In
honor of Women’s History Month, this invitational exhibition combines
nostalgia, visual dialogue, and shared artistic experiences in a variety
of media by eleven women artists. Each has inspired, informed and
influenced generations of students, colleagues, curators and critics
while leaving an impressionable mark as an accomplished artist living
and working in Florida. Many of these women are working professional
artists in the Tampa Bay area, including Rebecca Sexton Larson, Karen
Kuykendall, Judith Powers-Jones, Susan Livingston, Susan Rollins
Gehring, and Norma Lewis (d.). Other invited artists include Eleanor
McCain, Sang Roberson, Akiko Sugiyama, Caitlin Beckman and Lynn Whipple.
Several of the artists will be present during the Opening Reception in downtown St. Pete on Saturday, March 12th. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday 11am-6pm; open Sundays 12-4pm through the month of March.

All artwork will be available for sale and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to St. Petersburg Audubon Society! Join our talented member Paula Briggs for her solo show during the monthly art walk. Paula's work is inspired by her love of all things tropical. She uses carving and color to enhance her forms with depictions of nature.

The Leslie Curran Gallery premieres a new series of paintings by Jules Cozine inspired by the extraordinary experience of seeing a massive flock of starlings twisting and turning in unison, known as a murmuration. In an instant, thousands of individual birds commit to a moment of beauty that appears both melodic and mathematical.
With her signature ethereal color palette and post-modern compositions, Cozine creates indefinable shapes, like dappled light through the trees. A fractured vision, her soft edges and subtle hues suggest scenes in motion.
Cozine has consistently invested in artistic and educational causes through her association with charitable organizations. Her work is thematically marked by profound dedication to environmental issues. Making this the subject matter of her painting enables Jules to present an enthusiastic celebration of nature.
Cozine's expression of dedication through her artwork and her continued advocacy belies a deep commitment to environmental issues and the beauty of nature. In observance of this pledge, the artist is donating a portion of the proceeds from this event to the TAMPA BAY WATCH, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection and restoration of the Tampa Bay estuary through scientific and educational programs.
Cozine earned B.A. and B.F.A. degrees from the University of Georgia and an M.F.A. from Georgia State University. She held teaching positions at the University of Georgia, Savannah College of Art, Atlanta College of Art, and Georgia State University while maintaining a rigorous exhibition schedule and building a family before moving to St. Petersburg. Her extensive exhibition record includes multiple solo shows and dozens of group exhibitions. She has traveled widely and lived abroad (including Italy, Japan, France and England), and her family has hosted guest students for the Takamatsu, Japan Student Exchange program for the last four years.
MURMURATIONS opens on the evening of March 12th, 6-9 pm and continues through April 2nd, 2016.

March 12th will be my first public showing of work in a year.
It is a show about balance.
