We tend to think, color blindness aside, that we all see more or less the same, color-wise. This is not true. There is a 128 time range of variation in non-pathological human color vision. Worse, color is not absolute, it is relative.Color appears to change, chameleon-like, depending on what other colors and tones are surrounding it. People's memory of color also varies greatly, even of very familiar colors, like Coca-Cola red, once they are isolated from their usual chromatic context.

Leonardo Da Vinci developed his own theory of color. Isaac Newton followed. The German poet Goethe came up with the color wheel in 1810. Albert Munsell developed the color system later used by the US Bureau of Standards in the late 1800s. Around 30 years later, Kandinsky's extremely interesting book on color came out. Later, Farber, Johannes Itten and Albers.

 This is a history and theories every artist should know, and Color Acting at the Museum of Fine Arts is  good place to start.Most of the work is from the MFA collection, with some works brought in. It is the first show put together by the new Chief Curator, Katherine Pill. It's a great show.

Bud Lee Show @ Grown Man Studios

One of this weekend's best bets in the arts is Bud Lee's show @ Grown Man Studios, 6412 Central Avenue, Tampa. The solo show is this Sunday and features Bud's oil pastel work. The artist will be present, and a documentary about him by Fred Smith and Matt Wiggins will be shown. Bud Lee is one of the founders of the Artists' and Writers' Ball, a renowned photographer, with two LIFE magazine covers to his credit, and much, much more. The show is this Sunday, July 21st. This is a great opportunity to meet and experience the work of Bud Lee, one of the best arts people Tampa and the Bay area ever had.

Lost and Found.

 American Style Magazine named Saint Petersburg Florida the number one mid-sized city/art destination in the US. The hype that followed this rating has been considerable. From posh parties with blinking ice cubes in my fancy drink to elbow-polished counters at dive bars (yes, that one) over barely passable and eminently afordable gin and tonics, I've heard this cited by delusionary optimists, pom-pom waving cheerleaders/civic boosters, way too many bloggers who should know better, businessmen etc. numerous times. The City has been ballooning on all this hot air since Sept. 2010.

There had been considerable cries of complaint about the dissonance between the hype and the boots-on-the-ground reality of the rank and file artists. Ma Trib even assigned a writer and did an article about it. The Manna is coming....it will er...trickle down eventually.







No, it will not. What the Trib completely overlooked was the unthinkable.







By the end of this year, or early in 2014, three of the largest, best-funded, top galleries in the City will have closed.  Yes, closed. One already is. The big top in the Saint Petersburg Art scene is folding the tent. The local support for the top of the arts food chain is not here.




This is a reality check for the Arts in St. Pete. It's all too easy to make and/or embrace unrealistic claims, harder to live up to the hype. This can be seen as precipitate from the economic situation (plus lag). The reality is that the market for the upper end artists -- as it is for the less known -- is dire. As above so below. I talk to practically everyone, and I kept hearing the same thing. The level of dissonance between that and the hype was a total disconnect.




What is about to happen has already happened: It has already fallen. I am not writing this in an apocalyptic/grim/doomy-gloomy tone, but as an opportunity.  This is a golden chance to realign ourselves with reality, and to come to terms with the fact that we are all in the same boat. The time is to lay down the BS, stop listening to and pumping the hype factory, no matter how good the parties, and deal with things as they are, not as we would wish them to be.



Saint Petersburg has many true things and people to be proud of. You read about them here all the time.

Life Forms, Pale Horse Solo Show -  In this solo exhibit, Pale Horse explores the concept of living entities or “life forms” and how human beings are more than physical matter but capable of profound awareness, boundless thought and complex function.

The inspiration for this new series arose from an eight-week hiatus to undergo a much-needed hip replacement surgery where Chris Parks, the artist behind the Pale Horse name, experimented with audio frequency meditation, lucid dreaming and visionary exercises to distract from the discomfort and make the healing process more enjoyable.

The completed “Life Forms” collection is the realization of the visions “dreamed up” during that time and expanded upon since then. The series seeks to take non-physical concepts like lucid dreaming, astral projection, spirit guides and alternate dimensions to the physical level through illustration.

The series also embraces a concept that Pale Horse refers to as “the color of darkness” where each piece stands as a timeless snapshot, capturing the moment when dreaming becomes lucid and shadows transition from dull shades of gray to a full spectrum of vivid color and complexity. Known for experimenting with a wide range of production methods in his digital work, Pale Horse has produced his “Life Forms” on several layers of precision cut, acrylic glass to add even more depth and intrigue to the imagery.

Come explore this mysterious world of monstrous beings, spirit animals and altered states from the mind of Pale Horse during this one-night-only exhibit!

New prints, t-shirts and other products will also be released during the opening.

Erin Parish is the daughter of four artists. As a child growing up, common talk on Sunday mornings centered on the New York Times and the art world and its philosophical and commercial vacillations. Parish listened intently and began to form significant and lasting opinions about art and the pathways of creative thinking. She has been exhibiting regularly since the age of eighteen and is now nearing her fourth decade of being a practicing artist.

Her early influences ranged from Joseph Cornell to the German Expressionists and Neue Wilde artists of the 1980s. Today she is very much taken with the Hudson River School artists as well as Moriko Mori, Yayoi Kusama, and Japanese woodcuts by Hokusai and Hiroshige. She finds herself aligned with the Japanese principles of Wabi Sabi and Yugen.

Les Blank Screening, Thursday, 7/11/2013. Post #4.

Last night Les Blank's Mardi Gras documentary, "Always for Pleasure" was shown. A keenly insightful, immersive view of New Orleans (Pre-Katrina) that ambitiously attempts to incude as many socio-cultural and visual aspects of this event as possible. The details of things like food preparation provide the viewer with things others have passed by. Blank's interests in the ecstatic experience are in this film, but he never gets suckered in by the spectacular. His films are heart and brain food, not eye candy.

Tonight, it is "Garlic: Better than Ten Mothers", a look at what is often called "the stinky rose". Bring a garlic-based appetizer and get in free. Otherwise it's $5. I urge all reading this to take advantage of this uniquely cool opportunity and see this and the other Les Blank films.

Les Blank Tribute, 3rd post....

Last night, Tuesday, July 9th, The Les Blank Tribute/film festival showed "Sworn to the Drum" and "A Well-Spent Life". There was good attendance, including a few faces from the Saint Petersburg contingent who dared cross the Bay. It was great to see Ed, Elena and John Capouya, UT professor, NYT journalist, and writer extraordinaire. At these screenings in the Grown Man Studios, the audience, which is packed with creatives, is as interesting as the movie!

A Well-Spent Life is a portrait/character study of Mance Lipscomb, one of the greatest blues guitarists ever, filmed in his town and around his property/house. The Les Blank touch of transparency behind the camera is evident, which gives viewers a sense of intimacy that seems unmediated. Lipscomb, like so many of Blank's subjects, turns out to not only be a master guitarist, but an intensely humane, community-minded person and keen observer of the social structure he lives in and human nature in general. Blank does not succumb to the lure of the spectacular. Instead, he reminds us of what it means to be human.

In Sworn to the Drum, Master Afro-Cuban percussionist Francisco Aguabella is featured. A man steeped in tradition, like other Blank subjects, part of a rich socio-historical fabric that goes back for centuries to Matanzas, Cuba, then to Africa. We see Aguabella as the outcome of this thread, keeper of the flame, and teacher who is passing the baton to generations to come. This drumming harkens back to a time and place where religion and art were one, and we are given a taste of the ceremonial/sacred aspects.

Tonight, Wednesday, July 10th, is Innocents Abroad, 1991. It is about a tour of American tourists in Europe. Only $5.00 Doors open at 7:00 PM, all at Grown Man Studios, 6412 Central Ave, Tampa.

Les Blank Tribute @ Grown Man Studios.

For those who love documentary cinema, this month of July is the Les Blank Tribute, being held in conjunction with the Cuban Sandwich Show. Les Blank who passed away recently was a world-class documentary filmmaker born in Tampa. No less than thirty of his films are being shown through July 31st at Grown Man Studios, a media production facility located at 6412 Central Avenue in Tampa. $5 admission. Last night the classic "Gap-toothed Women" was shown, also a 2nd film by Victoria Jorgensen about the Chinsegut film festival and USF's early film days. If you want to see what real non-corporate truly first-rate indie film is about, this is a rare opportunity for everyone in the Bay Area. Tonight, July 9th, it is "A Well-Spent Life", the story of famous Texas Bluesman Mance Lipscomb, and a 2nd film, "Sworn to the Drum", about Master Afro-Cuban percussionist Francisco Aguabella.

 

 For cinephiles, this is a truly unique event in the Bay area. In the audience you will be rubbing shoulders with some of the top creatives on either side of the Bay. This is an event I can endorse without reservation.

Nuance Cuban Art Exhibits

Zines Coming to the 600 Block

I received this from Malcom Johnson and was sitting on it waiting for verification, but Rosey Williams has done this, and it has been made public already, so here it is...

   Since this is 'International Zine Month'  and www.stolensharpierevolution.org.  has a poster with zine activities for each of the 31 days, I decided to push for the 'Free Zine Day' activity on Saturday, July 20, 2013, and have it as a sidewalk event in the 600 Block. Ramblin' Rose will be involved as well as some of the people from The Venture Compound ( today, I spoke with David Z. Morris and the girl who lives at the Venture Compound who wanted to help. Jesse is not aware of this at this second, but will be. The Venture Compound people had a table at the Indie Market today.) It will be an event that includes 'Free Zines' and 'Purchase Zines'. 

     Not everything is set in stone yet, so it is not ready to be announced, but I will let you know as soon as it is ready.

     The hours are not set yet, but it will probably be early afternoon and be about 3-4 hours.
