‘’ THROWING CAUTION TO THE WIND’‘, Jay Herres @ Merhige Gallery
One approach to contemporary painting is first creating controlled
“accidents” on the canvas. Artists who use this process often have
seemingly endless techniques. Sometimes splattering paints, pouring
paints, “flooding” the surface, to name a few. Artist Jay Herres says
one of two things may happen after this phase. Either an artist
considers the work essentially complete with little additional work or
the effects act as a “springboard” for creativity. The “springboard” is
where the ultimate challenge begins, struggling to use all your skills
to make the work successful. As with painting, there are various
approaches and techniques to heighten creative potential when drawing.
“Throwing caution to the wind” while a struggle, is a great way to
create works of art that could have never been preconceived.

The
Creative Care program, which was awarded a prestigious National
Endowment for the Arts grant, employs eight visual, performing and
literary artists at All Children's Hospital. These artists-in-residence
work one-on-one with children at their bedsides and in small groups.
During art-making sessions, pediatric patients, their family members and
caregivers are invited to participate in art making, such as creating
visual artwork, writing poetry, reading and playing music,
storytelling, choreographing and many other activities. The program
addresses the whole person
in healthcare settings, as well as forwards Creative
Clay's mission to make the arts accessible to all.
