The Price of Admission: Personal Risk. Ancient American Cave Art.

  This article from Slate is worthwhile reading, but what stands out to me is that a lot of early art was not easily accessible. In fact, it involved personal risk for both artists and viewers in climbing to precarious perches, or going up to miles underground with flickering torches in order to create/view the imagery. It was a journey not many undertook.
