A humble proposal on Second Saturday: No fast food.

Seen at Duncan McClellan Glass

As the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", but often what is not broke can be made better. Second Saturday has been getting bigger and bigger over time. It is now to the point where *I* can't get to everything, and I am practiced to move rapidly through exhibits, gloss over the vapid ones, talk with artists and friends, and know the tricks and routes. 2nd Saturday has become so big that even starting early and rushing, I can't make it to everything.

This means a lot of 2nd Saturday Gallery Walkers aren't, either. I have recently spoken with many who said they barely made it to 1/3rd-2/3rds of the venues. Many of the process/demos cannot be appreciated and enjoyed unless one devotes a significant amount of time to them. Perhaps 2nd Saturday has become too big for one night a month?

Could two Saturday Walks be a better solution?  It would be a more relaxed situation for those wanting to see all of the art, would enable those with a scheduling conflict to attend, and give the arts junkies (and many of them are also art buyers) an excuse to make 24 trips a year instead of twelve.

Art is not fast food.

  1. I agree Luis. The DAA is addressing this issue at our next meeting. I guess the big question is SHOULD someone want to see everything in one night or maybe savor a few highlights, hopefully spreading the love to different places each month.
